Nether Portals & Dimensional Travel

The Nether Portal is your gateway to the run. Building it quickly and knowing where to build your exit portal is essential for a sub-hour time.

1. Portal Construction

You rarely have a diamond pickaxe. You must "cast" the portal using lava and water buckets.

The Lava Pool (Standard)

The most common method. Requires a lava pool, a water bucket, and building blocks.

  1. Place a block in the lava, then water against it to form the base.
  2. Build a 3-high pillar and a 2-block overhang ("L" shape).
  3. Place water at the top to flow down.
  4. Place lava buckets into the flowing water to form the obsidian frame.

Magma Ravines (Ocean)

In ocean runs, dive down to a magma ravine. The bubbles give you air.

2. Lighting the Portal

If you don't have Flint & Steel, don't panic.

3. Blind Travel (The "Educated" Travel)

Instead of running thousands of blocks in the Overworld, travel through the Nether. 1 block in the Nether = 8 blocks in the Overworld.

The Math: Take your Nether coordinates (X, Z) and multiply by 8. That is where you will emerge in the Overworld.

When to Build the Exit Portal:

Don't just build randomly. Use "Divine" travel or "Calculator" travel.
