Essential Speedrunning Basics
Speedrunning Minecraft is a test of mechanical skill, game knowledge, and mental endurance. Before you grind for a world record, you need to master the fundamental tools and techniques that make a run possible.
1. Version & Setup
The standard version for "Any% Glitchless" is 1.16.1. This version has the best Piglin trade rates and Pearl drop rates.
- Loader: Fabric (Lightweight and allows legal performance mods).
- Allowed Mods: Sodium (Rendering), Lithium (Logic), Starlight (Lighting), Krypton (Network), and LazyDFU (Startup).
- Legal: Always check speedrun.com/mc for the latest rules on allowed mods and resource packs.
2. Controls & Settings
Default settings will slow you down. Optimize your setup for speed.
- Hotkeys: Bind slots 1-9 to keys you can reach instantly (e.g., R, F, C, V, Z, X). Scrolling is too slow.
- Reset Key: Bind a key to quickly disconnect and create a new world (using macros/scripts where legal).
- Render Distance: Lower it (5-8 chunks) for better performance, but raise it (16+) when scanning for bastions or fortresses (e-raying).
3. Movement Techniques
You should never just "walk". Every second of travel time is time lost.
Core Techniques:
- Sprint-Jumping: The baseline. Always sprint-jump on flat ground.
- Head-Hitters: Jumping under a 2-block high ceiling (like in Nether tunnels) boosts your speed significantly.
- Boat Travel: Boats on Blue Ice are the fastest travel method (70+ m/s). Even on regular ice or water, they are superior.
- Dolphin's Grace: If you find a dolphin in the ocean, swim with it for a massive speed boost.
4. Inventory Management
Menuing is a skill. Practice moving items without thinking.
- Shift-Click: Instantly moves items between containers.
- Drop Key (Q): Hover over items and press Q to drop them instantly. Ctrl+Q drops the whole stack.
- Hotbar Management: Always keep your water bucket, blocks, and food in the same slots every run to build muscle memory.
5. The Reset Cycle
99% of runs end in a reset. Knowing when to reset is crucial.
Instant Resets: Bad biomes (Badlands, Mountains), no trees, no structure in sight.
Playable Seeds: Village spawn, Shipwreck, Ruined Portal, or Desert Temple.
